Summary information on the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake (Japan), 4 Jan 2024

At 16:10 on 1 January 2024, an earthquake of magnitude 7.6 on the Richter scale (GLIDE No. EQ2024-000001-JPN) centred on the Noto Peninsula, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, caused an intensity 7 (JMA) in Shiga Town, and intensity 6+ and 6- in many municipalities in the Noto Peninsula. Also, a tsunami of up to 1.2 m was observed. The earthquake caused many deaths, injuries, collapsed houses, spreading fires and landslides. The ADRC, the secretariat of the Sentinel Asia Project for the DRR application of space technology, accepted emergency observations after the disaster and worked to assess the damage in the Noto Peninsula, the centre of the damage, and collected the latest information.

Basic Information

 The Noto Peninsula is located in northern
Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, and its major
cities and populations (as of 1 December
2023) are Nanao (48,352), Wajima (23,192),
Shika (18,267), Suzu (12,610), Noto
(15,224) and Anamizu (7,360).
 Seven damaging earthquakes have been
recorded since 1700, with a maximum
intensity of 6+ on 25 March 2007, resulting
in one death, 338 injured and 684 houses
completely destroyed.
 A M5.4 earthquake with a maximum intensity
of 6 on 19 June 2022 and a M6.5 earthquake
with a maximum intensity of 6+ on 5 May
2023 were recorded, with human losses and
house damage respectively.
 Thus, seismic activity has increased on the
Noto Peninsula since December 2020, though,
the JMA states that the relationship between
the previous earthquake swarms and the
current earthquake is unknown

Airbus has said its experts will assist with the investigation into the Japan Airlines jet crash at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport.

A Japan Airlines Airbus A350 turned into a fireball after it collided with a coastguard plane as it landed on Tuesday. Five of the six people on board the smaller aircraft died.

All 379 passengers and crew of the Japan Airlines flight were evacuated before the plane became engulfed in flames, with 14 people receiving minor injuries.

The coastguard aircraft was taking emergency supplies to help rescue efforts after Monday’s earthquake in central Japan.

The Japanese Red Cross Society (JRCS) is a special corporation established under the Japanese Red Cross Law of 1952. Its highest governing body is the Board of Representatives, which is composed of 223 members elected by the Boards of Councillors from among the Society for a term of three years. The Board of Representatives meets twice a year to elect a president, two vice-presidents, three auditors, and 61 governors (all for three-year terms) and to make decisions on important matters such as annual budgets, operational plans, and statute modifications. The Board of Governors’ primary responsibility is to assist the President with and deliberate on the management and execution of important activities and to approve matters referred to it in accordance with the Statutes. Since it usually only meets in its entirety three times a year, it may entrust its responsibilities to the Standing Board of Governors, which meets monthly, and is composed of not more than 13 members elected from among the Governors.
